- Since 1980 global sea levels have risen by about 100 mm. According to a University of Auckland study, hundreds of islands in the Pacific are accumulating enough sediment to increase in land area even as sea level rise threatens the region. The focus of the study, Jeh Island, (one of the Marshall Islands, which are routinely held as “most at risk of disappearing due to sea level rise“) grew 13 percent over the last 80 years. - Some wonderful news! On Monday, the FDA approved a new preventative treatment for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a disease that is the leading cause of infant hospitalization, the killer of an estimated 120,000 children worldwide in 2015, and estimated to cost $5 billion/year in global medical costs. The vaccine is 70% effective at preventing disease, a huge improvement on previous treatments. It has been approved in the EU since November 2022. https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-new-drug-prevent-rsv-babies-and-toddlers
