I am currently travelling the beautiful African archipelago of Cabo Verde and recently visited its first settlement - Ribeira Grande. It was the first European settlement south of the Tropic of Cancer - over 500 years ago! Here’s the central pillory:

The article below describes the life of Negrito Manuel, a historical figure symbolising the fusion of African traditions and European Catholicism. Born in 1604 in West Africa, Manuel was captured and sold into slavery in Guinea, and brought to Ribeira Grande in Cabo Verde. He underwent ‘ladinização’ or latinisation, a forced process of cultural and religious assimilation into Latin culture, before being shipped to Brazil. He became very devout, witnessed a miracle, and is currently in the process of beatification by the Catholic Church.
